Raven Theatre Company's exploration of Horton Foote will continue with its free reading of Foote's Courtship, the fifth of nine plays in the writer's The Orphans' Home Cycle, a series of plays based on the life of Foote's father between the years 1902 and 1928.
The first play, Roots in a Parched Ground, was originally written in 1962. The other eight were written in the1970's and produced individually between 1978 and 1999. The plays were produced as a complete cycle for the first time in 2009 by Hartford Stage and New York's Signature Theatre.
Courtship concerns the courtship and the first year of marriage of Horace Robedaux and Elizabeth Vaughn, the characters based on Foote's parents.
Raven's reading will be directed by Raven Associate Artistic Director Cody Estle, and the cast will include a number of favorites from recent Raven productions, including its current production, Foote's Dividing the Estate (which will close on Saturday, March 28). Jen Short (All My Sons, The Playboy of the Western World) will play Elizabeth and Tim Martin (Dividing the Estate) will be Horace. JoAnn Montemurro and Will Casey will play Elizabeth's parents, Mrs. and Mr. Vaughn and the cast will also include marssie Mencotti and Catherine Marcroft (Dividing the Estate), Sophia Menendian (Good Boys and True), and Chris Borek (Vieux Carre).
