Rasaka Theatre Company, in residence at Victory Gardens Theater, Continues its 2015-16 season with the Midwest premiere of Shane Sakhrani's A WIDOW OF NO IMPORTANCE, directed by Lavina Jadhwani. Rasaka is the Midwest's only theater ensemble illuminating the South Asian American experience.
Deepa, a devout Hindu woman living in Mumbai, has been a widow for two years. Her only desire now is to see her daughter Tara married so that she can die in peace. But when she starts receiving romantic advances from her recently divorced neighbor Vinod, who is also her son's best friend, she starts to see the benefits of living. A WIDOW OF NO IMPORTANCE runs approximately 110 minutes with one 15 minute intermission. Post-show discussions with the cast and crew will be held following all Sunday matinees except opening and closing weekends (free with paid ticket).
"Rasaka is proud to be a part of the Resident Theater Program and Victory Gardens' diverse and inspiring artistic community," said Producing Artistic Director Kamal Hans. "We are excited to produce A WIDOW OF NO IMPORTANCE, which continues to examine relationships and traditions within South Asian culture. Shane has written a richly-layered play - with a tip of the hat to Oscar Wilde - that will transport audiences to modern Mumbai, where they'll enjoy a roller coaster ride through strongly held cultural norms."
