Oracle B*Sides is proud to announce the opening of PINK MILK, a new play by Alex Paul Young, in a co-production with White Elephant, a new Chicago theatre collective. PINK MILK is a drama infused with dance inspired by the life of Alan Turing, the British mathematician known as the father of modern computers. This poetic and compelling new play is directed by Brandon Powers. PINK MILK opens August 10, 2013, and runs through September 7, 2013 at Oracle Theatre (3809 N Broadway in Chicago). Performances are Friday, Saturday, and Monday nights at 8PM; Sundays at 7PM.
Admission to PINK MILK is free in Oracle's Public Access Theatre. Reservations are highly recommended, and can be made at publicaccesstheatre.org. Seats are sponsored by The Forty 4, a growing population of individuals and local businesses committed to making free art for all. The Law Offices of Salvi, Schostok and Pritchard are the official sponsors of Public Access Theatre in 2013.
"As a reaction to the media's coverage of Tyler Clementi's suicide, I wanted to explore the emotional truth of the life of Alan Turing, whose avant-garde approach to computer science was stunted by society's refusal to include his queer lifestyle into their world," says
Alex Paul Young. "PINK MILK includes many different types of queer narratives that fit both into Alan's staunch world, where homosexuality was illegal, and our contemporary world, where queer individuals are still hurting themselves because society will not include them in its threads."
PINK MILK is a drama infused with dance inspired by the life of Alan Turing, the British mathematician known for creating the Turing Machine - the precursor to our modern day computers. Lonely, gay, Snow White obsessed Alan meets Christopher, a boy whose passion for piano is as deep as Alan's passion for pi. But as soon as he appears, Christopher is gone. As Alan grows older, he builds robots to replace his lost love, tries to find answers from a talking daisy, and gets lost in trysts with curious boys until the fateful day Alan meets the mysterious Arnold, whose poisoned apple causes Alan's life to spiral out of control. Through movement, poetry and electronic music, PINK MILK is an experience that intersects science and art by exploring a rich fantasy world while navigating complex themes from our present society.
Hailed by Newcity Stage as one of the Top 5 New Plays of 2012, Mr. Young wrote PINK MILK while pursuing his undergraduate degree at
Northwestern University. After its initial premiere on campus by the student group Verti
Go Productions, the play journeyed to FringeNYC and Chicago Fringe, where it saw sold-out performances and enthusiastic feedback. Now, a new, full-scale version of PINK MILK is presented to Chicago as part of Oracle B*Sides, and admission is free in Public Access Theatre.
The creative team features Emma Pardini (Scenic & Prop Design), Jessica Carson (Lighting Design), Cassandra Bowers (Costume Design), and Juli Del Prete (Graphic Design). Rachel Stubblefield-Tave is Stage Manager. Rachel Birnbaum and Louis Schermerhorn are Producers.
Alex Paul Young, Breanne Ward, Abby Schwarz and Naomi Rosen are White Elephant theatre collective members. David Boren is Director of Programming for Oracle Productions, and Ben Fuchsen is Executive Producer.
