We're starting a new feature here: On The Record. Broadway World critics and Chicago actors, dancers, directors and choreographers tell us what's on their playlist. Broadway World editor Misha Davenport kicks things off with what he's got on repeat at the moment:
HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL
Original release date: June, 2014
Label: Yellow Sound
What initially appealed to me: The cult-favorite 1989 film perfectly encapsulated what it felt like growing up as a Gen X teen in the '80s with signature snark and sarcasm. In an era of famous people being famous for "leaked" porn tapes and being famous just because, the musical perfectly encapsulates the cult of personality that is signature to many "idols" today.
Must-Listen Track: "Beautiful" does everything an opening number should: establishes a time and place, sets the goals and obstacles before our plucky protagonist Veronica and hooks you with a great melody. She's selling her soul to be popular and yet it is "Beautiful." Bonus points for referencing some of the film's signature score in the tune, too.
Why it's still on my playlist: With music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy, it is reminiscent of both their previous works (O'Keefe's BAT BOY and LEGALLY BLONDE and Murphy's REEFER MADNESS as well as his non-musical work on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES), but has surprising depth upon further repeat listening. "Fight For Me," "Lifeboat" and "Kindergarten Boyfriend" in particular.
