Next Theatre Company will present the Chicago premiere of Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's BOOM. The production will run September 11 through October 11.

NTC's new Artistic Director will direct the production.

It's the end of the world. Do you have a date?
As an undiscovered comet hurtles towards earth, a lone scientist takes it upon himself to preserve the human race through a personal ad. But his plan for "intensely significant coupling" is more than his first date bargained for, food is running out, and his marine lab-turned-shelter is now beyond repair. This darkly funny experiment is an off-beat and hilarious look at the end of the world and how we might start anew.

BOOM will feature Shannon Hoag, Kelly O'Sullivan and John Stokvis.

The creative team for the production features scenic design by Andre LaSalle, costume design by Chelsea Warren, lighting design by Seth E. Reinick, and sound design by Nathan Leigh.

"Mr. Nachtrieb has a gift for darkly funny dialogue and an appealing way of approaching big themes sideways." -New York Times

"Sex! Planet-ruining cataclysms! Loads of booze! We're ready for whatever strange places boom wants to take us."-Variety

"Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's play flips from pants-around-the-ankles comedy to hipster ‘Twilight Zone' takeoff...boom is imaginative and easy to like. -The New Yorker

Next Theatre Company produces socially provocative, artistically adventurous work.

It is our vision to become a national destination for audiences and artists who share our vision that theatre can promote awareness and provoke change with more power than any other medium of expression.

Since our founding in 1981 by Harriet Spizziri and Brian Finn, our 167-seat space has been home to over a hundred productions, serving nearly a quarter of a million theatergoers and winning Jeff Awards in nearly every category. The theater's adventurous spirit and great conviction prompted Richard Christiansen of the Chicago Tribune to announce that The Next is "a resounding reaffirmation of what faith, dedication and talent can accomplish. It is what distinguished Chicago theatre in its Early Stages more than a quarter century ago, and it is what continues to make Chicago theater so exciting. How fortunate we are to have theaters such as The Next in our midst."

We serve over 10,000 patrons each year, including students, elderly, and everyone in between. Our audience includes locAl Evanstonians as well as Chicago and North Shore residents, and they have come to expect artistic excellence in the pursuit of culturally progressive work. As Dan Zeff of Copley News observed earlier this year, the Next is quickly becoming "the venue of the edgiest theater in the area."
