The legendary Plácido Domingo returns to Lyric for a single evening in March for a glorious musical celebration - his only Chicago-area appearance this year.
The dynamic, multitalented singer, who has parallel careers as both conductor and administrator, has thrilled audiences the world over with thousands of performances in the world's top opera houses, concert halls, and massive arenas. He has sold millions of recordings and won a dozen Grammy Awards. He is universally beloved and admired, and still maintains a daunting international schedule as a singer and conductor, in addition to his role as general director of LA Opera.
Lyric audiences have cherished Mr. Domingo's stellar performances in 11 operas and numerous concerts over the years, and are delighted to welcome and honor him this season. The extended Lyric Opera family will gather for Celebrating Plácido on Thursday, March 9, at 7:30pm. The musical feast will celebrate his many talents and showcase his acclaimed artistry.
The exceptional evening will begin with a semi-staged presentation of Act Two of Verdi's La Traviata (including the magnificent party scene), with Mr. Domingo portraying Giorgio Germont. Soprano Ailyn Pérez will make her Lyric debut as Violetta, and tenor Michael Spyres will portray Alfredo, joined by members of the Ryan Opera Center and the Lyric Opera Chorus under the baton of conductorEugene Kohn (Lyric debut).
Ms. Pérez and Mr. Spyres will join Mr. Domingo in the second half of the evening for a concert of popular opera arias and duets from the Italian and French repertoire.
Last year's concert at Lyric by Mr. Domingo and soprano Ana María Martínez sold out, and this will be his only Chicago appearance in 2017. Don't miss this exceptional opportunity.
