"Lyric wants to make opera accessible to all of Chicago," says Lyric's general director Anthony Freud. "And what better way to engage our youth than presenting them with an important and popular recent work that's sure to captivate and enthrall. A Streetcar Named Desire is compelling and very accessible both musically and dramatically. This evening will live in the memory of these young people for many years to come."

André Previn composed A Streetcar Named Desire in 1997 with the world-renowned soprano Renée Fleming creating the role of Blanche DuBois. The opera received its world premiere in San Francisco in 1998 and has been performed in numerous U.S. cities, as well as in Europe, Australia, and Japan. Streetcar's libretto is by Philip Littell.

This presentation is part of Lyric Unlimited, a multifaceted program of expanded community engagement and artistic initiatives aimed at exploring ways in which opera can resonate with individuals and communities.
