Chicago Jazz Orchestra featuring Dee Alexander - A Salute to Count Basie's Great Vocalists

Tuesday, January 3; 7:30 p.m.

$12/$15/$18/$22

The Chicago Jazz Orchestra and vocalist Dee Alexander team up to perform music of the great singers who performed with the Count Basie Orchestra, including Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington. Featured in the performance will be a new transcription of a 1948 bootleg live recording of the Count Basie Orchestra and Dinah Washington performing "Nasty Gal Blues."

For more than 35 years, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra has been at the forefront of presenting performances of classic American jazz orchestra repertoire to diverse audiences through reasonably priced programs held at a variety of venues. Always looking for new challenges, both in repertoire and stylistic choices, Jeff Lindberg has infused the Orchestra with a spirit of versatility that has made the group a favorite performer not only in jazz venues, but also for concert settings, receptions, and dances - just about anywhere that exceptional big band music can be presented. The Chicago Jazz Orchestra is Chicago's oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation and one of the oldest jazz repertory orchestras in the country.

Anthony David

Monday, February 6

$28/$30/$32/$35

Anthony David's hit single "Words," a duet with India Arie was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. He followed up with his album release, entitled As Above, So Below which included the Top 20 R&B/Hip-Hop hit "4evermore." His latest album, The Powerful Now, was released in 2016.

Doyle Bramhall ll

Wednesday, February 15

$30/$34/$38/$42 + $20 SRO tickets

A left-handed guitar player who plays a right-handed strung guitar flipped upside-down, Doyle Bramhall II stands as one of the most distinctive vocalists, guitarists, composers and producers in contemporary music. Eric Clapton, with whom Bramhall II has collaborated for more than a decade, cites him as one of the most gifted guitar players he has ever encountered. Bramhall II has also played and toured with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Roger Waters and more.

In addition to his work with Clapton, Bramhall became an in-demand composer, guitarist and producer. He enjoyed high profile collaborations with a broad range of other major artists, including T-Bone Burnett, Elton John, Gary Clark, Jr., Gregg Allman, Dr. John, Robert Randolph, Allen Toussaint, Billy Preston, Erykah Badu, Questlove, Meshell Ndegeocello and Sheryl Crow, whom he produced and composed songs for on 100 Miles from Memphis (2011) and then joined her to support the record on tour. In 2015 he teamed with ace guitarist Derek Trucks (with whom he was proclaimed "The New Guitar Gods" by Guitar World when both served in Clapton's band in the late 2000s) in the Tedeschi Trucks Band, also starring Trucks' wife, Susan Tedeschi. Bramhall's songs and guitar playing have graced each of the three critically acclaimed Tedeschi Trucks Band albums issued to date.

Head for the Hills

Friday, February 17

$15 advance / $18 day of show

A quintessential Colorado band, Head for the Hills is a forward-thinking group of (mostly) acoustic musicians drawing on eclectic influences, tastes and styles. Their music has been described as "post-bluegrass," "progressive string music," "modern acoustic noir," and "bluegrass bricolage." They didn't grow up immersed in bluegrass music but came to it later in life, with each other. The result is a sound based in bluegrass that reaches into indie rock, jazz, hip hop, world and folk to stitch together fresh songs that bridge the divide between past and future acoustic music. Head for the Hills - Adam Kinghorn on guitar and vocals, Joe Lessard on violin and vocals, Matt Loewen on upright bass and vocals, and Sam Parks on mandolin - have been bringing their music to audiences from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival to South by Southwest and a multitude of stages in between since 2004. The band has independently issued three studio records and one live, been featured on NPR Ideastream and eTown, co-released a beer with Odell Brewing Company, and charted on the CMJ Top 200.

Tom Paxton featuring The DonJuans (Don Henry & Jon Vezner)

Saturday, March 4

$30/$35/$35/$40

Tom Paxton has become a voice of his generation, addressing issues of injustice and inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture, and celebrating the most tender bonds of family, friends, and community. Paxton's song books, critically acclaimed children's books, award-winning children's recordings, and a catalog of hundreds of songs (recorded by artists from Willie Nelson to Placido Domingo to Johnny Cash), all serve to document Paxton's 45-year career. Paxton has been an integral part of the songwriting and folk music community since the early 60s Greenwich Village scene and continues to be a primary influence on today's "New Folk" performers. In describing Paxton's influence on his fellow musicians, Pete Seeger has said: "Tom's songs have a way of sneaking up on you. You find yourself humming them, whistling them, and singing a verse to a friend. Like the songs of Woody Guthrie, they're becoming part of America."

Los Lonely Boys with Sugar Dirt and Sand

Sunday-Monday, March 12-13

$40/$45/$50/$55

The Los Lonely Boys are a sibling trio (guitarist Henry Garza, bassist JoJo Garza, and drummer Ringo Garza Jr.) whose style draws equally from rock, blues, Tex-Mex, conjunto, and tejano. The brothers recorded their eponymous debut album in 2003 at Willie Nelson's Pedernales studio in Austin, with Willie himself guesting on the sessions. The album quickly won the band a large national audience. Its lead single "Heaven" became a Top 20 pop hit, reached the #1 spot on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart and eventually won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. After a prominent guest appearance on the 2005 Santana album All That I Am, Los Lonely Boys solidified their success with 2006's Sacred which brought two more Grammy nominations, 2008's Forgiven, and the holiday-themed Christmas Spirit. Meanwhile, the band continued to build its reputation as a singularly powerful live act. Their most recent album, Revelation, was released in 2014.
