Holy High Holidays Batman! Theater Wit's smash hit BAD JEWS has been extended a record eighth time, and will now run through both the Hanukkah and Christmas seasons at Chicago's Royal George Theatre.
Originally extended through December 10, Joshua Harmon's smart, funny play about 20-something Jewish cousins grappling with faith, family and identity will now play through December 27 in the Royal George's cabaret studio, 1641 N. Halsted St. in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood.
Show times are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Exceptions: No shows Thursday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) or Saturday, December 25 (Christmas Day). BAD JEWS is the story of 20-something Daphna Feygenbaum, a "Real Jew" with a boyfriend in the Israeli army. When Daphna's cousin Liam brings home his shiksa girlfriend Melody and declares ownership of their grandfather's Chai necklace, a vicious and hilarious brawl over family, faith and legacy ensues. Stir in the identity curation of the Facebook generation and BAD JEWS is one of the funniest, wisest, conversation-starting comedies now playing in Chicago. Want to get the family laughing - and talking - over the holidays? Take them to BAD JEWS.
BAD JEWS was a surprise storefront hit last spring for Theater Wit, a sold-out sensation last summer at Skokie's North Shore Center, and is now back and in its third month at the Royal George as one of the hottest shows in the city.
Mazel tov to the cast and crew of Theater Wit's Chicago premiere production: actors Ian Paul Custer as Liam, Cory Kahane as Jonah, and Kelly O'Sullivan as Melody.
Margo Chervony is new to the cast as Daphna. Her credits include The Birds (Hell in a Handbag Productions), The Robbers (Strangeloop Theatre), Emma (New Suit Theatre) and collaborations with Jabberwocky Marionettes.
The BAD JEWS creative team includes Jeremy Wechsler (director), Adam Veness (set), Brandon Wardell (lights), Janice Pytel (costumes), Cassy Schillo (props) and Sarah Luse (stage manager).
Joshua Harmon's play BAD JEWS received its world premiere at Roundabout Underground and was the first production there to transfer to the Roundabout's Laura Pels Theatre (Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Award nominations, Best Play). BAD JEWS opened in London at the St. James Theatre in January 2015 following an acclaimed run at Theatre Royal Bath.
Theater Wit is in its fifth season in its home at 1229 W. Belmont Ave., the heart of the new Belmont Theatre District in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. There, Theater Wit is winding up the run of The (curious case of the) Watson Intelligence by Madeleine George, a smart, funny, dizzying trip with four Watsons and eight million human hearts, hailed an "exceptionally smart show" by the Chicago Tribune. Performances run through November 14.
Soon after, Wit opens its twelfth annual staging of The Santaland Diaries, based on David Sedaris's uproariously funny, droll reminiscence of his less than merry misadventures as a Christmas elf gone bad, November 20 through December 30.
