Did you hear that social media is the wave of the future? Fire up ye old Twitter on your fruit tablet, break out all your spare hashtags and be sure to tag @AmandaBynes and her various bird-lady wigs, because GayCo Productions' all-new revue #GodHatesHashtags is trending off the social media charts.
Through scenes and song, #GodHatesHashtags explores gay identity after hate, lesbian bar culture after the closing of T's, the sanctity of Cracker Barrel after being desecrated by homosexuals, the inanity of social media sex profiles, the corporatization of gay rights groups, and the twerk-tinged wisdom of disregarded LGBTQ youth.
Ultimately, what will happen to the gay community after #GayMarriage and #Equality are no longer trending topics? Probably lots of twerking.
#GodHatesHashtags previews Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7:30pm at Donny's Skybox (1616 N. Wells) and opens Saturday Sept. 7 at 7:30pm. It runs Saturdays through Oct. 19. Tickets are $16 ($13 for students and $10 for Second City Training Center students) and can be purchased by calling 312-337-3992.
#GodHatesHashtags is written and performed by Kathy Betts, Christopher Lotito, Jamie Newland, Clay Goodpasture, John Loos, Alexandria Miller, Becca Levine and Robin Trevino. GayCo alumnus and Second City Writing Program Head Andy Eninger directs, with Michael Goldman and Charlie Worth providing musical direction and Aimee Davis assistant directing.
GayCo Productions was formed out of the famous Second City in 1996 and has produced over 25 original sketch comedy revues, performing across the continent and in Europe. This is their first show with a # symbol in the title.
