Get your wig caps and stilettos on for The Annoyance Theatre's debut Drag Queen Dramedy Glitter in the Gutter. Inspired by John Waters, Designing Women and Dionne Warwick, Glitter in the Gutter offers a fresh look at drag culture while paying R-E-S-P-E-C-T to its roots. Presented in the style of a live musical sitcom with loads of sass and drag queen drama, Glitter in the Gutter explores what is fake and what is "realness".

The plot unfolds in a crummy apartment with windows that look out into trash-filled alleys. Pepper LaRoo and Velveeta Fitzgerald are inseparable drag queen roommates that dream of hitting it big and leaving the frugal life behind. When things start looking up for one of them, their relationship is put to the test and the girls are forced to rethink their understanding of glamour and the importance of sisterhood.

Glitter in the Gutter came together under the creative tutelage of Kellen Alexander. Last October a shorter version of the play was presented to sold-out crowds at the Annoyance Theatre as part of the Triple Feature New Works Showcase. The show was instantly slated to become a full length feature because of the immense success of that showcase. So Alexander and lead "actresses" Seth Dodson and Wes Perry created an innovative story and style pulling from their respective backgrounds: Kellen's in English composition and storytelling, Wes's lounge act "Bedroom Cabaret" and vocal prowess, and Seth's expertise in stage make-up and costuming. They looked to the best of all things drag: To Wong Foo's heart, John Waters' filth, Drag Race's camaraderie, and Barbara Streisand's nose. An injection of their own personalities into this world created the first ever Drag Queen Sitcom (excluding Golden Girls, of course). All three collaborators are veterans of the Chicago comedy scene and perform regularly at iO, The Annoyance, Lakeshore Theatre, and The Playground.
