Now you can own your own famous theatre - four, actually, according to a new article in the Chicago Tribune.
Wendy and William Spatz are selling the Greenhouse Theater Center (also known as the old Victory Gardens Theater), 2257 N. Lincoln Ave, in the heart of Lincoln Park. And, best of all, owner financing is available.
The couple purchased the complex in 2008 as a philanthropic gesture, in order to help the finances of Victory Gardens, but have no desire to keep the theater themselves.
"It was never our intention to keep running the theater," said William Spatz. "We came into this to help Victory Gardens. And we feel that a theater company should own the building."
The one condition to the sale is that the complex must continue to be operated as theatres for at least the next two decades.
William says he's even willing to finance the deal and, further, to write a $100,000 check to whichever company takes over the space.
"What theater company wouldn't want it?" he asked.
There are no preferred candidates, insists Spatz. The joint is up for grabs. "But when Saturday night rolls around," William said, "there had better be four theaters with four shows."
