About the Book: In THE STEAL: A Cultural History of Shoplifting (The Penguin Press; July 4, 2011), Rachel Shteir presents the first ever serious study of shoplifting. Who steals and why? What do they steal? How do they do it and how can stores stop them? What are the consequences of being caught? Shteir, author of the award-winning book Striptease and an associate professor in dramaturgy and dramatic criticism at The Theater School at DePaul University, examines the rich and fascinating history of shoplifting from its modern roots in Elizabethan England-when stealing was punishable by death-through today. Along the way, she addresses shoplifting in its every iteration, from compulsive stealing as a disease, to a representation of teen angst, to an act born out of desperate need, and to a form of protest against governments and corporations.
