Ben Carlson returns in the title role of
Macbeth
Staged by Artistic Director Barbara Gaines
Chicago Shakespeare Theater's (CST) Artistic Director Barbara Gaines stages Macbeth-the first production of the "Scottish Play" in her distinguished career. Unrelenting-from its dark beginning to its tragic conclusion-Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's most enduring and haunting plays. In this story infused with superstition, ghosts and madness, Macbeth murders his king and all who stand in the way of his ambition. Returning to CST in the title role is Ben Carlson, featured classical actor at the Shaw and Stratford Shakespeare Festivals of Canada. Carlson made his Chicago debut in CST's 2006 production of Hamlet for which he received the Jeff Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Dorcy Rugamba, director of The Investigation and founder of the Urwintore ensemble, has edited the script with Isabelle Gyselinx into a riveting 80-minute adaptation performed by a Rwandan and Congolese cast. The re-imagined work draws startling parallels about human complicity between the 1994 Rwandan conflict and the atrocities of the Holocaust. Rugamba's interpretation has received critical acclaim in performances in Rwanda, Belgium and the UK. The Guardian describes the work as having "shattering power" and suggests that it "should be seen by as many as possible." |
