Part Hitchcock, part Monty Python and a whole lot of fun, Broadway In Chicago welcomes the 2008 Tony Award winner, Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, to the Bank of America Theatre for a limited engagement, now through May 30, 2010. Based on the book by John Buchan, our hero, Richard Hannay, just out for a night at the theatre is lured into a world of intrigue by a mysterious femme fatale. When she winds up dead in his flat, Hannay flees London to clear his name.
The 39 Steps features a cast of four actors who, breathlessly attempt to reenact all of the characters, locations and famous scenes from Hitchcock's 1935 film thriller. With just a few props and split second costume changes, it becomes a game for the audience to see if the actors are even going make it out there on time. For someone who has had her fair share of quick changes, that was probably the funniest (if not most underappreciated by the matinee audience) aspect of the show.
The cast was hilarious and the production was lush (a pleasant surprise considering that this is such a short run). Be warned though. If you are a Hitchcock purest, this is by no means the show for you. Nonetheless, if you do enjoy the genre, have a strong funny bone and a deep appreciation for puns, you need to check out Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps.
