On Monday, March 1st, 2010, Chicago Opera Theater (COT) launches its second annual YouTube Contest encouraging the public to upload videos of their interpretations of any of the three operas in COT's 2010 Spring Festival Season. The YouTube contest is titled: "How do YOU make opera less ordinary?"

"We greatly enjoyed the many fun and creative entries in our first-of-its-kind YouTube contest last year, and I am personally looking forward to seeing people's take of our operas this season," said General Director Brian Dickie.

Contestants are asked to create and upload their interpretations of Rossini's Moses in Egypt, Cavalli's Jason (Giasone) or Heggie's Three Decembers. Synopses to all three of the 2010 operas are available at COT's 2010 YouTube Contest webpage: http://www.chicagooperatheater.org/arias/2010youtube.html

The top three winners-chosen by the public-will receive two free subscriptions to COT's 2010 Spring Festival Season (April 17-May 16). All runner-up video entries will receive two passes to the final dress rehearsal of their choice-so everyone is a winner!

Chicago Opera Theater kicked-off the contest by creating the first video:

Chicago Opera Theater has been a leader in Web 2.0 initiatives beginning with creating one of the first blogs in the performing arts community: Brian Dickie, Life as General Director of Chicago Opera Theater. Started in April 2005, Brian Dickie's blog was recently named "Best local arts, culture or nightlife blog" by Newcity Chicago and is featured on InsideTheArts.com and The Huffington Post Chicago.

Chicago Opera Theater has active fan pages on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, Yelp, Flickr, and Going.com. All of these pages are found at ChicagoOperaTheater.org under Look, Listen & Follow: http://www.chicagooperatheater.org/arias/online.html. Last year COT's first annual YouTube Contest "Why Do You Deserve Free Tickets to Chicago Opera Theater?" was one of the first-of-its-kind in the opera world.

CHICAGO OPERA THEATER

Founded in 1974 by Alan Stone, Chicago Opera Theater has carved a significant place for itself in the operatic life of Chicago and has reached an audience of hundreds of thousands through its main stage performances, outreach, education and young artist programs.

Since Brian Dickie's appointment as General Director in 1999, COT has evolved as an opera company that is young, fresh, and colorful - an image well suited to its surroundings at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park.

The 2010 Spring Festival Season runs April 17 through May 16 at the Harris Theater. The season opens with Rossini's Moses in Egypt (April 17-25), followed by the Chicago Premiere of Cavalli's Jason (Giasone) (April 24-May 2), and closes with Heggie's Three Decembers featuring acclaimed mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade in her final Chicago opera performances before her retirement (May 8-16). On May 10 COT will also present "An Evening with Frederica von Stade and Jake Heggie."
