This fall, Broadway's beloved classic finds a home in Chicago. Annie, Sandy and the gang appear at the Cadillac Palace Theatre for Annie's acclaimed national tour. Gilgamesh Taggett, the production's original Oliver Warbucks, joins Broadway World for an exclusive interview on bringing this heartfelt story across the nation.

You've been touring with the show for three years! What has this journey been like?
Completely marvelous! I've traveled to many different countries, many different cities, but the people are the same. They all have a connection to this wonderful show. Throughout my time with Annie, I've made many wonderful friends and continue to be so honored that I'm trusted with this character.

This musical continues to draw in new generations. Why do you think this show remains so popular in 2016?
Everyone, no matter who they are, wants to feel the hope that Annie represents. It's that American spirit. Anyone in the audience can connect to this show in some way. I myself am adopted, so I find love and happiness when I hear this story each night.

What is your favorite part about playing Oliver Warbucks?
I'm continually finding Oliver's humanity. He's a driven businessman who never wants to come across as vulnerable. Honestly, I do fall in love with this role every night. The cool part is we have many 'Annies' come onboard and I get to be open and receptive to a new human being. It keeps things fresh.

As someone who has been in the acting business for decades, how did this all begin?
It's a '40-year overnight-success' story! In kindergarten, we did a play of Three Billy Goats Gruff and I remember that was the distinct moment I fell in love with performing. I grew up in a Midwest farm community and always assumed I'd be in a factory job--I just never registered that this could really be my career path.

When I got involved with community theater, generous people who thought I had talent made my dreams achievable. Personal relationships (some call it "networking") are so crucial in this industry. I love it because every day is new opportunity.

Do you have a favorite role?
I love them all! Can I say that? Each role is a different experience. Oliver Warbucks and Billy Bigelow from Carousel certainly rank at the top of the list. With Warbucks, I've gotten the rare chance to spend so much time with one character and really explore who he is. That's such a cool thing.

The company is comprised of very young performers! What is it like to work with so many kids?
They are fantastic and I'm delightfully envious of this entire experience. They're learning so much so young and growing immensely in their craft. They teach me new things weekly. We're a team. I'm the only original cast member so it's always sad saying goodbye, but it's such a joy to meet actors who bring new perspective, energy and vibrancy.

The music of Annie is some of the most recognizable on all of Broadway. Do you have a favorite song?
"Something Was Missing". It's someone confessing a hole in their life. It's very human. Always touching.

Over the course of three years, you've traveled to so many places. Do you have a favorite part of this experience?
Seeing the gorgeous theaters we get to perform in is a favorite thing of mine. Meeting tons of cool people is also something that really stands out. One of my favorite memories is getting to meet U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords.

What are you looking forward to most when visiting Chicago?
Chicago may be the second city to some, but I absolutely adore its unique lifestyle. I lived there many years ago and have some really close friends that I'm excited to see (shoutout to my dear friend, Alex Johnson!). Also very excited to return to that food!

Last but not least, any projects on the horizon?
I'll be collaborating on a podcast and working to help design a web forum specifically for actors. I'll also be writing and doing a few cabaret acts...when I'm not hanging out with dogs and kids, of course.
