Artemisia is Chicago's premiere theatre for the development and production of all new feminist plays that center on women who have agency, independence, and are the focal point of their own narratives. Our annual fall festival features six full-length, women-empowering plays discovered through a passionate search by our artistic staff. Each play is read only once and followed by a dedicated audience discussion focused by two questions - Does the Play Empower Women? Does the Play challenge you to see women in a new light? Artemisia's Artistic Director chooses a play from the festival to undergo an exciting development process that celebrates the playwright's unique feminist voice and engages our audience directly in workshops and discussion, leading to a premiere production in Chicago. In years prior, audiences were asked to vote for their favorite Fall Festival play and the play would be produced the following year.
"Artemisia has a long-standing commitment to the playwright's creative process. Our new production model - having the artistic director select the play from the Fall Festival and inviting the audience to be part of our special development events - creates exciting opportunities to nurture great feminist stories and, hopefully, add to the canon of America's best female-empowering plays," says Artemisia Founder and Executive Artistic Director Julie Proudfoot. With this new two-year development process, the playwright, and the play, will have time to fully benefit from Artemisia's creative process with the end goal of an outstanding story ready for a thrilling production. The first two plays slated to go through this exciting new model will be Traci Godfrey's SWEET TEXAS RECKONING in June 2019 and Caity-Shea Violette's REAP THE GROVE in 2020. "My experience with the indomitable and talented Julie Proudfoot who was instrumental in helping me to pull into focus my award-winning play SWEET TEXAS RECKONING, along with the incredibly timely mission of Artemisia make this remarkable and ground-breaking theatre the indisputable right choice for my play's Midwestern Premiere," Traci Godfrey, playwright, SWEET TEXAS RECKONING. Julie Proudfoot is slated to direct both productions as Artemisia shifts into this new structure and will also be leading all workshops, readings, and other developmental processes for both scripts. These events will give the playwrights time to nurture their work and receive vital feedback from some of Chicago's finest theatre artists. "I believe Artemisia will be a powerful home to nurture this story and further empower me to push my artistic bravery to new heights to discover and honor each layer of these four women. This development process will be crucial to the evolution of REAP THE GROVE," Caity-Shea Violette, playwright, REAP THE GROVE. Artemisia is inviting audience members to join in these events and see the new play development process up close and personal.
