AIMING FOR SAINTHOOD opens July 11

16th Street Theater announces the premiere of Arlene Malinowski's Aiming for Sainthood directed by Ann Boyd as part of WORDS IN MOTION festival curated by Artistic Director Ann Filmer at the Berwyn Cultural Center July 11-20 2008 with a press opening of July 11 at 7:30 PM.

When her Deaf mother becomes ill, a middle-aged woman moves back into her childhood room with two questions: "Where is God?" and "Who took my KISS poster?!" Aiming for Sainthood (commissioned by 16th Street) is part two of Malinowski's trilogy beginning with What Does the Sun Sound Like?, the totally true tales of a hearing daughter growing up in a Deaf family and culture. See both shows on Saturday July 12 & 19.  Sign language interpretation: July 19.

Arlene Malinowski is an actor/playwright whose solo shows have been produced in venues nationwide and has been honored with an LA Theatre Ovations nomination, an LA Weekly Award and a Garland Award. Arlene is also a writer/performer with the nationally touring, multicultural show A Slice of Rice, Frijoles & Greens, a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists, and a founding member of the literary ensemble In So Many Words. Arlene's stories are told through sign language and voice inviting the audience to share a world beyond their experience.

"I believe that everyone has a story that will stop your heart but people have stopped telling them because we've stopped listening.
Through my autobiographical solo work it's my hope that people will recognize that our stories have a way of telling the truth and connecting us to who we are, where we come from and who we can become. Most importantly, I believe our stories connect us with each other."

WORDS IN MOTION Festival

WORDS IN MOTION is a part of 16th Street Theater's Season One at the Berwyn Cultural Center, following Will Dunne's The Ascension of Carlotta and Teatro Luna's highly recommended hit MACHOS which sold out its entire run in just a few weeks.

Aiming for Sainthood will be followed by the theatrical adaptation of Susan Hahn's book of poetry The Scarlet Ibis opening on Thursday, July 24 at 7:30 PM, and New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Berg's adaptation of her novel The Pull of the Moon opening Thursday, August 7 at 7:30 PM. All three shows make up 16th Street Theater's WORDS IN MOTION festival.

"We are honored these three award-winning authors are bringing their words to 16th Street. Here they will collaborate with theater artists to stage their imagined worlds and become WORDS IN MOTION," says 16th Street Theater Artistic Director Ann Filmer.  "It's about the movement of the language, heightening the audience's imagination, and bringing out the beauty and strength of these female authors' words."
