‘Amelia Earhart Jungle Princess’ Makes its World Premiere
The New Colony’s Inaugural Production from Award-Winning Creative Team
The New Colony, Chicago’s new theater company dedicated entirely to World Premieres, will start its inaugural season with Amelia Earhart Jungle Princess, the next project from the award-winning creative team of James Asmus and Andrew Hobgood. Written by Asmus and directed by Hobgood, Amelia Earhart Jungle Princess is, “an escapist adventure fantasy, with a thoughtful underbelly,” says Asmus.
Amelia Earhart Jungle Princess unfolds the possible history of the expedition that actually found the legendary pilot living as a semi-amnesiatic jungle-woman. Shifting between wild jungle encounters and dangerous showdowns of business and politics, the story extrapolates the two sides of the Earhart mythos - as a daring pioneer and divisive feminist icon.
Asmus and Hobgood recently won the FringeNYC award for Outstanding Music & Lyrics with their critical and box office hit Love is Dead: A NecRomantic Musical Comedy. Hobgood won the Outstanding Musical award at FringeNYC in 2006 with 58! A Comedy about Bike Messengessengering which he co-created and produced.
“We founded The New Colony to create new theater that would matter to American audiences, as well as attract new, typically non-theater-going audiences,” explained Hobgood. “James and I saw Amelia as a great way to provide the exciting, visceral experience of live theater while intellectually exploring feminism and turn-of-the-century politics.”
