A new archive of Chicago theater performances, modeled after the New York Public Library's Theatre on Film and Tape Archive which has documented productions since 1970, is being created through Actors' Equity and the Chicago Public Library.
As reported by The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Film Archive of Performance will allow anyone with a valid photo ID to watch recorded shows at its new permanent home in the Harold Washington Library's Special Collections and Preservation Division.
Productions are chosen for their cultural, historical, aesthetic and educational value. Premiers, unique events, community interest, and contributions of particular value by performers, directors, and/or designers are given special consideration in selecting productions to archive. The Executive Director makes the final selection based on suggestions from the Board of Directors and recommendations of the Joseph Jefferson Committee, the judging body of Chicago's Joseph Jefferson Awards.
