To accommodate the high demand for tickets, American Theater Company (ATC), 1909 W. Byron Street, has added performances for its critically acclaimed Chicago premiere of The Royale by Marco Ramirez (Marvel's Daredevil, Orange is the New Black), directed by ATC Ensemble Member Jaime Castañeda. This newly revised script premieres in Chicago prior to its production at The Bush Theatre in London.
Wednesday and Sunday evenings have been added in the final two weeks of the run, which must close as scheduled on March 29, 2015, due to final preparations and tech for The Project(s)-ATC's upcoming world premiere documentary play on Chicago's public housing. The performance schedule for The Royale is: Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Sundays at 2 p.m.; and additional Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. from March 18-29. Single tickets for The Royale at American Theater Company range from $48-60 and are available by calling the ATC box office at 773-409-4125 or visiting www.atcweb.org.
Combining innovative theatricality with a blistering story, Marco Ramirez's The Royale is based on the story of Jack Johnson, the world's first black heavyweight champion, and the sacrifices he makes to take his place in history. The cast includes Jerod Haynes in the role of Jay, with Edwin Lee Gibson as Wynton, Mildred Marie Langford as Nina, Julian Parker as Fish, Philip Earl Johnson as Max, and ensemble members Eric Gerard and Jeffery Freelon.
"The Royale is one of those rare plays that works on so many levels," says ATC Artistic Director PJ Paparelli. "There's no other play quite like it: theatrical, bold, brutally honest. I'm thrilled to premiere this new version and welcome Marco to Chicago."
