16th Street Theater will give a free community performance of Tanya Saracho's critically-acclaimed play Kita y Fernanda at Chodl Auditorium-a 2,500-seat venue listed with the National Register of Historic Places-at Morton East High School, 2423 S Austin Blvd in Cicero, on Monday, March 27 at 7:00 PM. All are welcome.

Kita y Fernanda is a look at class, immigration and women's friendships as it follows the lives of two girls growing up in the same household; one is the privileged daughter of a rich Mexican family living in Texas, the other is the child of an undocumented maid. In the play Fernanda attends an immigration march in Chicago when she sees Kita, her long lost best friend from childhood who was the daughter of their live-in maid. The play goes back in forth in time where we see Kita and Fernanda growing up together under the same roof. Tensions mount when they realize they do not share the same prospects for their future.

This staged reading will feature the original cast from 16th Street Theater's Jeff-nominated 2008 production: Charin Alvarez, Belinda Cervantes, Stephanie Diaz and Suzette Mayobre. This performance is a part of 16th Street Theater's Pop Up Series underwritten by the theater's 100 Club members.

Tanya Saracho (16th Street playwright-in-residence 2008) had four plays produced at 16th Street: Kita y Fernanda (2008), Our Lady of the Underpass (2010), Our Holiday Stories (2011 and 2014) and Enfrascada (2012), She now lives in Los Angeles where she is writer and co-producer for the hit TV shows How to Get Away With Murder and Looking. Her newest play Fade premiered in New York in January and will be produced at Victory Gardens next season.
