There is nothing like a dame! Especially when the dame in question is the talented actress Christea Parent. Currently appearing in LADY X: THE MUSICAL, we caught up with her for 10 on Tuesday:
1) Show you first auditioned for (and did you get the part)? The first audition I remember was for my fifth grade talent show. I sang I Will Survive and coerced some friends of mine to be back up dancers. We totally got in.
2) Where are you originally from? I was raised a military brat, so I've been all over - home is wherever I am right now.
3) Currently working on / recently closed? Currently starring in "Lady X: The Musical", my fifth official show with Hell in a Handbag, where I am a company member. I'm also co-producing a variety show with Handbag called BAD TASTE featuring daring and bizarre performance art.
4) When did you first know you wanted a career in theater? My junior year of high school I was in a production of the little-known Andrews Sisters musical Over Here! - I had just finished doing one of my solo numbers and came off of the stage, exhausted; and I distinctly remember sitting in the green room and thinking to myself, "I could do this for the rest of my life." Luckily I've had enough support and resources to make that a real possibility.
5) What's your dream role production? I'm mostly excited by new works, but I would like to play Dot in Sunday in the Park with George
6) Favorite post-performance haunt? I usually go right home! But if I've got some energy, Pick Me Up cafe is a favorite of mine.
7) Living or dead, who would you drop everything to see perform? Nina Simone.
8) What's your greatest vice/guilty pleasure? I watch a lot of cat videos on YouTube; sometimes, to spice things up, I watch bird videos.
9) What are you currently listening to/watching/reading? Mostly cat and bird videos these days.
10) Describe the Chicago theater community in three words: Not New York
Parent appears in Hell in a Handbag Productions' LADY X: THE MUSICAL through June 8 at Mary's Attic, 5400 N. Clark. Tickets $26-$38. 800.838.3006 or www.handbagproductions.org
