Leaving Watermaine, a family drama, takes us to the not so distant past of “Jim Crow” South, 1942, Watermaine. GA, where a middle class, African American family, the Mainlodges, struggle to maintain dignity and family unity. Under the strict moral guidance of Werly and Wisteria Mainlodge, three sisters strive to forge their journey of self-determination and personal growth from the family ties that bind almost too tightly.
Against the backdrop of the mysterious murder of Jesse Moss, the Mainlodges and the Watermaine community search for answers, uncovering heartbreak, shame, ambition, colorism…. And ultimately triumph of spirit! Leaving Watermaine is a powerful testimony to the love of family and the fuel it provides for perseverance. Leaving Watermaine was a finalist in the Susan Smith Blackburn playwright award, and selected for NC Playwright Lab in Raleigh 2022.
Booth Playhouse is at Booth Playhouse 130 N. Tryon Street, Charlotte NC, Charlotte, NC.
