All Roles are available - Non-traditional, color blind casting will be in effect.

Please prepare 16-24 bars from a Stephen Sondheim song (I don't recommend singing from the show unless you are amazingly confident about the role you want.) Please choose a song which shows your range and also shows that you can handle Sondheim's difficult music. All members of the cast will sing. This show has no non-singing roles. In addition to the nine principal roles is a chorus which will be on stage a great deal singing a ton of difficult but amazing music. Please understand that the stage show is not the movie. The chorus is very active and vocal in this show. Also, this is an adult show. I realize that Tim Burton cast a child as Tobias, and while that is a possibility, probably the role will go to an adult as originally written. In addition to singing you may be asked to read from the script. You will not have to dance at this audition.

Age ranges for the roles will be dictated by the people that audition, but Sweeney, Mrs. Lovett and the Judge must be believable as the elders of Johanna, who is about 16 years old.

Character descriptions and voice classifications:

SWEENEY TODD - Baritone. The barber of the title. Strong singer and actor. Lead role. Must be able to deliver rage without losing our sympathy.

MRS. LOVETT - Alto/Mezzo. The pie-maker. Considers herself desirable. Probably evil, but has the ability to expose her softer, more loving side.

TOBIAS - Tenor. A "slow" young man. Is required to "sell" several barker type songs while delivering the gentle ballad, "Not While I'm Around."

Anthony Hope - Baritone/Tenor. The romantic lead. About the only "good guy."

JUDGE TURPIN - Bass. The villain of the story. Strong singer, and a menacing presence. Nothing kind about him.

JOANNA - Soprano. The ingenue who is the ward (and object of lust) of the Judge, the daughter of Todd, and the love of Anthony.

BEADLE BAMFORD - High Baritone/Tenor with a strong falsetto. The corrupt magistrate and the Judge's enforcer.

BEGGAR WOMAN -- Mezzo. A desperate, sad, but alternately brazen street woman.

PIRELLI - Tenor. An ItalIan Barber/street charlatan. Not only must the actor be able to speak with an Italian accent, a Scottish brogue is also required.

CHORUS -- All parts. Male and female.
