Old Courthouse Theatre and Black Box Productions 49 Spring Street NW Concord, NC 28025 704-788-2405 presents "COUNTERGIRLS"
The 3rd prodction in - "The Living Room Reading Series" A Comedy by Michael Russell Sunday, January 17, 2010 at 4:00 pm.
COUNTERGIRLS is a full-length comedy by Michael Russell, set at the lunch counter of a F.W. Woolworth's in a small Southern town in 1990. The counter is managed by Lib Stallsworth, whose burgeoning country music career was cut short twenty years earlier when she decided to forego the excitement and glamour of the Nashville music scene to raise a family. Now often separated from her husband and her son, both of whom are long-distance truckers, she is also estranged from her daughter, who has married for money and "got above her raisin'." To fill this void, Lib has developed a penchant for collecting strays with whom she shares advice that she has cobbled together from her life experience-and from Oprah, Readers' Digest, and Redbook. Lib extends herself and her resources to help Betty Ruth, her best friend from high school, recently returned from Texas and in the throes of a divorce; Donnie Ray, the mentally challenged orphan son of another friend, and the janitor and general caretaker of the lunch counter; Lynette, the crusty career waitress whose biggest fear is growing old and losing her independence-and her job; and Janita, a Pentecostal preacher's daughter who has "star" ambitions, a voice to rival that of any country music queen, and a salty tongue that belies her sweetness and innocence. Lib's loving and generous nature drives her big-hearted caretaking of this comedic quartet to an ending that surprises them all, including Lib-and will delight anyone who's ever given or received an act of kindness.
COUNTERGIRLS is a hilarious and heart-warming story, which the Charlotte Observer called " . . . Irresistible . . . ‘Countergirls' will leave you laughing well into the night" and prompted the Greensboro News & Record to say, "This is a happy play and a dadgum fun way to spend an evening."
