Single tickets are now available for the Flat Rock Playhouse 2019 Season of live theatre celebrating love, family and adventure. Known locally as Little Broadway in the Mountains, the Playhouse has showcased professional performances since 1952 with unparalleled quality. This season is no exception, as 61 equity actors and 16 equity-bound apprentices, as well as a host of union designers and technicians, gather at the Rock to delight audiences and continue the tradition of Broadway-quality theater.
This year marks a special place in the history of Flat Rock Playhouse with a homecoming to the Leiman Mainstage, where the entire season's offerings will be performed exclusively, says Artistic Director Lisa Bryant,
We're thrilled to host our 2019 season in the building where at all began, 67 years ago, Bryant said, adding that this year's guest experience will be enhanced, thanks to theatre upgrades in the works at the Leiman Mainstage that will include new seats, lighted flooring and the addition of a hearing loop for hearing impaired patrons.
Music on the Rock Concert Series brings the best-of-the-best musical traditions to the stage, featuring: The Music of the Beatles and Eagles, From Mozart to Pop with Nat Zegree, and Bee Gees Gold. All three productions will move audiences to their feet in celebration of these musical legends who transformed their genre forever.
The Flat Rock Playhouse will continue to wow audiences with original musical productions and regional music favorites. The summer's production of Cinemastastic: The Music of the Movies showcases soundtracks that evoke nostalgia and inspire dreams from childhood. As a salute to musical genres that define this region, Flat Rock Playhouse presents Country Royalty: Hank Williams & Patsy Cline and Smoke on the Mountain. Smoke on the Mountain features bluegrass music and gorgeous hymns played live by the performers. Finally, returning to the stage at the close of 2019, A Flat Rock Playhouse Christmas entrances audiences with holiday spirit.
The 2019 Season also brings the highs and lows of family life to the stage with plays that will make audiences laugh, debate, and jump from their seats. Sylvia explores the timeless relationship between man and his best friend, with an actress portraying the family dog, Sylvia. Neil Simon's Proposals honors the late playwright with a hilarious recollection of a family reunion. Meanwhile, Separate Beds brings new life to the enduring question, is the grass really greener on the other side, as two couples compare their relationships. And Rounding Third traverses the staunch views of two competing little league coaches preparing their teams for life and the question: should everyone get a trophy? Finally, in the fall of 2019, a chilling psychological thriller takes the stage with The Turn of the Screw, based on the classic novella by Henry James, in which a governess must care for her employer's mysterious children.
Shaking up the season this coming summer, Flat Rock Playhouse will produce refreshing and memorable musicals: South Pacific and All Shook Up. The classic, South Pacific, holds a cherished memory for Flat Rock Playhouse Christmas, as current Producing Artistic Director, Lisa K. Bryant, and Artistic Associate, Dave Hart, played the leads in 2002. The second blockbuster musical of the season, All Shook Up, invites audiences to experience the music of The King himself, Elvis Presley, as these rocking tunes tell a brand new story of young love.
Rounding out the 2019 season, Studio 52 Family Series productions will include classic children's stories: The Jungle Book and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Both stories delve into the challenges and friendships that come with growing up and finding your inner strength. Auditions for The Jungle Book will be held on Jan. 17th and 18th at the Flat Rock Playhouse Main Stage and are open to all ages. Studio 52 Winter Session classes are also open for registration and will begin on Jan. 29th. More information is available online at the Flat Rock Playhouse website.
