From March 4-13, Children's Theatre of Charlotte presents "And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank", a heart-wrenching look at the Holocaust through the eyes of young people who grew up during this dark period of history. This production is recommended for ages 10 and up.
"And Then They Came for Me" is a unique theatrical experience that tells the real stories of Anne Frank and Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss. Weaving videotaped interviews of Ed and Eva as adults with scenes in which actors recreate their lives, the production paints a vivid picture of life before and during World War II. Ed appears in Anne's famous diary as her first boyfriend, while Eva and Anne were the same age and grew up in the same apartment building. Like the Franks, Eva and her family went into hiding and were eventually betrayed to the Nazis.
"The importance and the challenge of producing 'And Then They Came for Me' is to make these historical events come alive as an immediate experience," says Mark Sutton, Core Artist at Children's Theatre and director of the production. "I think audiences will really connect with the multimedia approach that the show takes. Now more than ever, we live in such a visual world. Looking at more than one screen at a time has become the way that we take in reality."
The four-person cast includes Nicia Carla, Emily Johnson, Barry Newkirk and Chaz Pofahl.
To enhance the impact of this important piece, Children's Theatre and ImaginOn staff have planned a variety of activities around the production, including an exhibit in the Wachovia Lobby. Holocaust survivors Susan Spatz and Barbara Rodbell will join Stephanie Wood, an educator from the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust, for a talkback after the Friday, March 4 opening night show. The Theatre will also offer a special performance open only to faith-based youth groups on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 pm.
