Charlotte audiences can look forward to more than 30 special attractions representing the best music, comedy, and theatrical events available that are featured on the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center's 2009-10 season. They will also have additional opportunities to attend the best shows Broadway has to offer, as the Center announced today the extension of three of its Broadway shows with an extra week of The Aluminum Show, Jersey Boys, and Mary Poppins.

"We've had such phenomenal response to subscription sales that we quickly extended the runs of three of our fantastic Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series shows, Jersey Boys, Mary Poppins, and The Aluminum Show," said Center President Tom Gabbard.

The Blumenthal expects similar, strong reaction to its attraction lineup with several marquee names leading the list. Legendary comedian and accomplished banjo player Steve Martin joins The Steep Canyon Rangers to delight crowds at the Knight Theater, while Lyle Lovett and His Large Band will surely be a fan favorite, and Garrison Keillor will fill the Belk Theater with his storytelling magic.

Through an innovative partnership with The Comedy Zone, the Center will present some of the country's funniest comedians. The season kicks off with John Heffron and the return of Ralphie May then continues with an engagement of Craig Shoemaker and the return of NC native Jon Reep, who sold out two shows last season.

The successful partnership with MaxxMusic and Visulite Theatre continues as the Center hosts concerts by many of the most talented touring acts like John McCutcheon, Blue Highway, The Farewell Drifters & Blue Highway, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Saffire The Uppity Blues Women, and Chris Smither.

"The new season offers an incredible mix of entertainment and we're thrilled with the diversity of the lineup," said Gabbard. "There's sure to be a show for everyone."

Other special highlights include the return of Basic Training, which was a big hit as it kicked off its national tour here in Charlotte last season. Dance enthusiasts will be inspired by the beauty and talent of two renowned troupes coming to town: don't miss four performances by The Parsons Dance Company and seven performances by the unrivaled Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, all at the magnificent new Knight Theater.

"The Knight Theater is not only a great addition for the region, but we're thrilled by the opportunity that this amazing performance space gives us for showcasing innovative programming," said Director of Theatrical Programming Douglas Young. "With its contemporary design and just 1200 seats, the Knight Theater is an exciting new venue for enjoying intimate evenings of entertainment."

Tickets for the Center's special attractions will go on sale to the general public at various times throughout the year but Center members and Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series season subscribers will be able to purchase tickets to all Center attractions in advance of public sales. This special priority purchase benefit is one of the many perks enjoyed by Center members and subscribers.

Duke Energy Broadway Lights season subscribers can also take advantage of the popular "Ticket Swap" benefit, by swapping ONE of their seven Broadway Lights shows for any other event presented in one of the Center's venues.
