All roles compensated. The role of Mr.Givings has been cast.
All other roles available:
MRS. CATHERINE GIVINGS: a woman in her late 20's and married to Dr. Givings. She recently gave birth to a baby girl. As a Victorian woman, she doesn't have nearly the degree of equality she would like in her marriage. Lonely, tearful fits, anxious, curious, fits of rage and sometimes a bit naïve. She matures through the course of the play.
MRS. SABRINA DALDRY: a woman in her early 30's who is married to Mr. Daldry. At the beginning of the play, she is very nervous and cries easily. Dr. Givings treatment cures her. She and Mrs. Givings have a lot in common.
ANNIE: a woman in her late 30's. She is Dr. Givings' mid-wife assistant. She is practical, caring and she ends up finding herself attracted to Mrs. Daldry. She has a scientific mind. "She is the soul of tact and reserve."
ELIZABETH: an African-American woman in her early thirties. She lost her child in childbirth and becomes Mrs. Givings' wet nurse.
Leo Falls for her. She has a good amount of practical wisdom but has very little power in this Caucasian household.
LEO IRVING: an Englishman in his twenties or thirties. He is an artist who is having difficult painting. He sees Dr. Givings to cure his creative block and it works. He is very passionate and self-involved.
MR. DALDRY: married to Mrs. Daldry. A very practical man in his 40's or 50's who wants more regular sexual relations with his wife.
NOTE ABOUT THE PLAY
The play is set in a prosperous spa town outside of New York City, perhaps Saratoga Springs. It occurs at the dawn of electricity; and after the Civil War; circa 1880's. It is important that the time period is Victorian as these women are learning about their sexual desires through an electronic, scientific gadget. The play has a wonderful tension between Victorian ethics and sexual exploration.
As with most of Ruhl's plays, the characters are seeking connection, validation and love.
