The York Symphony Orchestra will present South of the Border on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York. This is the fifth performance of the 2017-2018 season, World Tour: A Musical Voyage Around the Globe, and the third in the classical series. Single tickets starting at $9 for adults and $5 for students are available online at www.YorkSymphony.org and by calling 717-846-1111.
This exciting performance will feature colorful, vibrant music either from or celebrating countries south of the U.S. border including Mexico, Cuba, Argentina and Brazil.
The York Symphony Orchestra will open the concert with Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez, a staple of contemporary Mexican music that is considered Mexico's third national anthem. The energetic performance will continue with Cuban Overture by George Gershwin, a piece dominated by Caribbean rhythms and Cuban native percussion followed by Bachianas brasileiras No. 5 Ária (Cantilena in A minor) by Heitor Villa-Lobos, one of the best-known South American composers in history. The first half of the performance will conclude with an exciting performance of the Four Dances from Estancia by Alberto Ginastera.
The second half of the performance will begin with Sones de Mariachi by Santiago Galindo, a large orchestra piece filled with exuberant rhythms and sounds of mariachi instruments, followed by Concerto for Mariachi and Orchestra Mvt. 1 by José Hernández and Jeff Nevin. Commissioned by the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Association and the Mariachi Heritage Society, this is the only concerto for mariachi and orchestra and is designed for standard orchestra concerts.
Mariachi Champaña Nevin, an ensemble that is internationally regarded as one of the leading proponents of "classical mariachi music" in the world, will join the orchestra as a guest performer for Concerto for Mariachi and Orchestra. Comprised of virtuoso mariachi and classical musicians, this unique ensemble fully embraces the ideals of traditional Mexican music and European classical music. Led by composer and trumpeter Jeff Nevin, Mariachi Champaña Nevin has delighted diverse audiences across the U.S., Mexico, and as far away as Russia, France and China for nearly two decades. They have also performed with many of Mexico's finest singers, including Plácido Domingo, Aida Cuevas, Jorge Lopez-Yañez, Mónica Ábrego, José Luis Duval, Rafael Jorge Negrete, Florencia Tinoco and José Medina.
South of the Border will conclude with Mexico de Joropo arranged by Jeff Nevin and Huapango by José Pablo Moncayo, which is considered Mexico's second national anthem.
"South of the Border is a celebration of lively and exciting music from Mexico, Cuba, Argentina and Brazil," said Lawrence Golan, the Jody & Louis Appell, Jr. Music Director and Conductor of the York Symphony Orchestra. "We look forward to welcoming Mariachi Champaña Nevin to the stage to offer an evening of high tempo, energetic mariachi band entertainment."
Guests of South of the Border will also enjoy free pre- and post-concert receptions based on the theme of the concert. Pre-concert, guests may sample an array of appetizers from El Serrano and post-concert guests may sample appetizers from Mi Caldero. The receptions are free to concert guests.
