The York Symphony Orchestra will present Prost! A Toast to Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York. This is the second performance of the 2017-2018 season and the first in the classical series, World Tour: A Musical Voyage Around the Globe.
The world tour begins in Germany and Austria with an Oktoberfest celebration! The York Symphony Orchestra, along with the York Symphony Chorus, will perform selections from German composer Johannes Brahms, and Austrian composers Franz Schubert and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. All three prolific composers utilized varying styles, themes, tempos and rhythms creating complex yet widely performed compositions. Guests at Prost! will experience some of the most beloved pieces from these prominent composers.
The evening's concert opens with Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3, featuring the debut performance of concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck, violin. Dillenbeck has toured Europe and the United States with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has played with the Seattle Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Pennsylvania Ballet Theater, Philly Pops and many other orchestras across the U.S. In addition to the York Symphony Orchestra, Dillenbeck is currently concertmaster of the Yakima Symphony, Siletz Bay Music Festival Orchestra, Lake Chelan Bach Festival Orchestra and the Northwest Sinfonietta. She was associate concertmaster of the Tacoma Symphony and has served as concertmaster for orchestras across the states and in England.
The other selections for the evening include Schubert's Magnificant, featuring the York Symphony Chorus led by chorusmaster Dr. Kathleen Shannon, as well as Brahms' Symphony No. 2.
"We are excited to share these classical music selections with our audience and incorporate a fun Oktoberfest twist. Prost! is a great kickoff to our classical series," said Lawrence Golan, music director and conductor of the York Symphony Orchestra. "We are also very excited to have Denise Dillenbeck join us as concertmaster this season and look forward to her performance."
Guests of the Classical Series concerts for the 2017-2018 season will also enjoy free pre- and post-concert receptions based on the theme of the concert. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., guests may sample an array of locally-sourced bratwursts from King Brat, paired with seasonal beer samples from Wyndridge Farm. Immediately following the concert, guests are invited to a dessert reception with items from Brown's Orchards and Farm Market. Both receptions are free to concert guests.
