York Little Theatre promises side-splitting laughter on their main stage with their summer blockbuster hit THE PRODUCERS, opening tonight, July 12. Called the "biggest hit in Broadway history," THE PRODUCERS won more Tony Awards than any other musical (12), including Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical. Based on Mel Brooks' 1968 film of the same name, this raucous, in-your-face musical comedy features a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer (Randy Staam) and his mild-mannered accountant (Lyle Hieronymus), concocting a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history, thereby milking their backers out of millions of dollars...but the ludicrous show becomes a smash hit! Adding to the crazy mix of characters is a curvy blonde bombshell office assistant Ulla (Rachel Ann Morgan), an unstable playwright Franz Liebkind (Andrew Matsuer), hack director Roger De Bris (Christopher Quigley) and his flamboyant assistant Carmen Ghia (Bradlee Alan Gorrera).
With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (ANNIE) and music and lyrics by Brooks, THE PRODUCERS will certainly tickle your funny bone with old ladies tap dancing with their walkers, Nazi soldiers goose-stepping to Springtime for Hitler, and a flaming director with an affinity for dressing in drag, orchestrating it all.
YLT's new Director of Artistic Services, Rene Staub, makes his directing debut at YLT with THE PRODUCERS. "The cast is amazing. The York area is fortunate to have such a wealth of talent to produce a show of this caliber," Staub said. The lavish set and costumes compliment the extraordinary talent and large production numbers that will have everyone rolling in the aisles with laughter. Some of the most notable costumes include showgirls sporting German-themed headdresses adorned with an oversized pretzel, beer stein and sausage.
There is more than a fantastic production that will be unveiled on opening night. York Little Theatre will have brand new restroom facilities featuring a larger women's restroom. THE PRODUCERS is the first production to utilize a new sound system and brand new doors to the main stage theatre compliment the recent updated lobby. York Little Theatre is grateful for the donations making these improvements possible.
THE PRODUCERS runs today, July 12-14 and 18-21. The curtain goes up at 7:30 pm. Sunday matinee's curtain is at 3pm. Call the box office at 717-854-5715 or go to www.ylt.org to ensure your seat for a large dose of laughter and a memorable theatre experience.
