The Ware Center in downtown Lancaster invites the community to attend November's First Friday on November 6 beginning at 6 p.m. for twelve unique 5-minute performances inspired by 19th century Georges Polti's book 36 Dramatic Situations and the paintings based on these Situations by artist Gail Gray, work that will also be on display. This will be the final installment of Gray's three-year project, the previous installments bringing standing-room-only crowds to the Ware Center in 2013 and 2014. The Ware Center is located at 42 N. Prince Street, Lancaster.
FREE Art Exhibit
A collection of Gray's abstract paintings--each representing a dramatic situation described in Polti's book--will be on display 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Regitz Art Gallery. Examples are "Loss of a Loved One," "Mistaken Jealousy," "Self-Sacrifice for an Ideal," and "Enmity of Kin."
FREE Dramatic Performances
In collaboration with Gray's art exhibit will be interpretations of the remaining 12 dramatic situations described in Polti's book, which suggested that the plot of every story and play ever written can be categorized into one of 36 dramatic situations. These original performances have been created by local performance artists, representing a "Who's-Who" of the Lancaster art scene and a wide variety of genres - theater, dance, music, puppetry, spoken word, and more, presented on the Steinman Hall stage. Each artist or arts companies is given five minutes to interpret one dramatic situation. As this is the final year of this three-year project, there will be one very special surprise performance included.
As Gray explains, "My wish is to create unique conjunctions, surprising relationships and multi-faceted expressions of these very evocative and resonant artistic interactions."
Gray has lived and worked in Lancaster, Pennsylvania since 1972, maintaining a downtown Lancaster studio at 34 ½ North Queen Street since 1991. Gray earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a dual major in Painting and Design from
Carnegie Mellon University (formerly Carnegie Institute of Technology). Gray continued her studies at Carnegie Mellon in graduate printmaking under the direction of Professor
Robert Gardener, founder of the Tamarind Printmaking Laboratory.
Gray has exhibited in juried and invitational art events nationally, regionally, and locally. She has worked in many media including painting, printmaking, fabric and fiber art, collage, assemblage and site specific installations, most notably in the Carnegie Museum of Art in an Associated Artists of Pittsburgh exhibit juried by renowned Dutch architect Aldo Van Eyck in 1969. Gray's works are featured in various Lancaster downtown public spaces including Saint James Episcopal Church, Marriott Hotel and Convention Center at Penn Square, The Lancaster Bar Association, Lancaster County Courthouse, Mid-Penn Legal Services, and the Lancaster Museum of Art's permanent collection.
Admission to view the art exhibit and performance of 36 Dramatic Situations (Part 3) are both free, but because of "sold-out" crowds in the past two years, tickets are necessary to see the performance. There will be two hour-long performances, the first at 6 p.m. and the second at 8 p.m. Your free tickets can be ordered online by visiting ArtsMU.com or by calling
717-871-7600. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Ticket Office located in the Student Memorial Center on Millersville's campus, or the Ware Center, located at 42 N. Prince Street, in Lancaster.
