York Little Theatre kicks off its 80th Anniversary Season with an action-packed, family-friendly, musical spoof of the comic book genre. The Adventures of a Comic Book Artist runs tonight, September 21 – 30 and features singing superheroes and dancing villains.
It tells the story of Stanley Sappovitz, the janitor at Wonder Comics, who wants nothing more than to become a comic book artist and create heroes and villains for the comic books he loves. When staff artists unwittingly draw with magic pens, their characters magically come to life and Stanley must save the day by drawing his own superheroes – perhaps the greatest superhero of all time.
The cast of 50 features Cora Siburt and Ava Markel as narrators, Stephen Baker as Stanley Leonardo Sappovitz, Sarah Stark as Mrs. Wunderman, Ginny Peck as Viola, Alex Wilkinson as Dr. Shock Clock, Austin O'Connell as Star Guy, Zach DePorter as Triple Time, Allison Thomas as Blossom, and Vail Varone as Wombat Woman.
The show is directed by Rebecca Wolf and the production staff includes Ben Rosenzweig, Stage Manager and Sound Designer, Ray Olewiler, Set Designer, Janay Elliot, Costume Designer, Alex Weinrich, Lighting Designer, and Bradlee Gorrera, Choreographer.
New and unique to this region, the theatre is offering a specially designated performance for families with special needs on Saturday, September 29, at 3:00 p.m. The show will be ASL interpreted, and lighting and sound will be adjusted to create a more relaxed, comfortable theatre experience for families who might otherwise hesitate to attend live theatre.
On Saturdays, between performances, from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m., audiences may experience a York Comic Con event, sponsored by Comic Store West and hosted by YLT, at no additional charge, which features vendor booths, comic give-aways, activities, and guest celebrity superheroes.
In addition, on Saturday, September 22, Joe Miller, from Lancaster's Comic Store, will deliver a talk, "From Cavemen to Avenger: A look at comic book history." On Saturday, September 29, local comic book artist Mike Hawthorne will be on hand to talk about the artistic side of comic book creation.
This production features the first of YLT's series of 80th Anniversary Reunion Receptions. The theatre encourages everyone who has ever been involved at YLT, and newcomers as well, to attend, meet new people, and share and listen to stories from YLT's extraordinary history. The first reception, honoring those involved at YLT in the 1980s, follows the September 23 performance of The Adventures of a Comic Book Artist, and is free of charge.
Performances run tonight, September 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 7:00 p.m.; September 22, 23 and 30 at 3:00 p.m. All tickets are $10, reserved, and group rates are available. Tickets can be purchased at www.ylt.org or 854-5715, from 11 - 5 weekdays.
