Roald Dahl's story comes hilariously to life on the main stage at DreamWrights revealing the wickedness of some, the goodness of others and what happens when we're faced with challenging choices.
Guest directed by Andrea Unger, this double-cast children's tale opens Friday, Feb. 15 at DreamWrights and has eight performances through the 24th.
"James and the Giant Peach is a story that all three of my own children really enjoyed," Unger said. "It is one we read repeatedly as they were growing up, so it holds fond memories for me."
The show is recommended for ages 7 and up and Unger notes there's some very dark humor with the aunts alongside some heartwarming and funny times between James and his insect friends.
Unger's excitement for the characters in this story - from aunts to Little Old Man and all the insects - helped the actors bring their roles to life on the stage. Unger hopes that everyone in attendance takes at least one important message home with them.
"Each of us on this earth has value, we affect the others around us and can ultimately change lives through our words and deeds," she said.
James and the Giant Peach is the second DreamWrights show for 2019 and Unger believes it fits in well with the season theme Celebrating Life.
"James, who is abused and miserable, always has hope," she said. "Through meeting wonderful new friends, who trust in him, he changes the circumstances of his life. He doesn't just live happily ever after, but carries on sharing his story to every curious child who takes the time to listen."
Tickets are available at DreamWrights.org for $12 general admission and $16 reserved. Tickets bought at the door will be an additional $2.
