The Players Club of Swarthmore presents the dark comedy The House of Blue Leaves March 17-April 1, for ten performances at 614 Fairview Ave. in Swarthmore. Written by John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation) and directed by Ruth Wells Fischer, The House of Blue Leaves, about America's obsession with celebrity, is devastatingly hilarious and never timelier than in our age of reality TV. It's 1965 and the Pope is coming to visit New York City. Artie Shaughnessy (Paul Kerrigan, Secane) is a songwriter with visions of glory and dreams of getting out of his humdrum life. Toiling by day as a zookeeper, he suffers in seedy lounges by night, plying his wares at piano bars in Queens, New York. Artie is both helped and hampered by the crazy aspirations of those around him, including his depressed wife Bananas (Allison Gerrard, Garnet Valley), mad Mistress Bunny (Karen Johnston, Lansdale), AWOL celebrity-obsessed son Ronnie (DJ Gleason, Media), and his big shot producer friend Billy (Jay Steinberg, Narberth). But will Artie's dreams of fame be swallowed up in the chaos of his ordinary life?
Rounding out the cast are regional actors Moriah Gornstein (Brookhaven), Rose Azrael (Media), Ilana Brookshier (Narberth), Ryan Henzes (Philadelphia), Adam Young (Lansdowne) and ElizaBeth Gallagher (Philadelphia).
