Performer/writer/director Laura Anne Harris brings her one woman show, Pitch Blond, to the Ware Center tonight, March 28, 2015 at 7:30 pm. The Ware Center is located at 42 N. Prince Street, Lancaster. In Pitch Blond, Harris portrays legendary Hollywood star Judy Holliday, who was best known for playing a dumb blonde in such comedies as It Should Happen to You and Born Yesterday, for which she won the Oscar. A tribute to Holliday's intelligence and humor, Pitch Blond offers an intimate look at Hollywood's history when Holliday testified in 1950 during Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communist inquisition, cleverly using her dumb blonde persona to avoid naming names.
Harris was inspired to delve into Holliday's life story when, during her first year of college, director Charles Marowitz commented that Harris had a Judy Holliday-like quality. Never hearing an account from the McCarthy period that was quite like Holliday's, Harris was compelled to showcase her story.
Harris was born and raised in Victoria, B.C and currently lives in Toronto. She trained at the University of Victoria's Acting program, graduating in 2007, and is currently a member of the Playwright Guild of Canada and a writer in residence of Steady States Theatre Collective in Toronto. Harris wrote and starred in Pitch Blond at the 2007 Victoria Fringe Festival where she won the 2007 Critic's Choice Award for 'Best Fringe Production.' Since then, she has performed this production at the 2008 Uno Festival in Victoria, B.C., the Sunset Theatre (Wells, B.C.), the Chutzpah Festival (Vancouver, B.C.), the 2009 Femfest (Winnipeg, MB,) the 2010 Winnipeg Fringe Festival winning 'Best of Fest' as well as the 2012 Solo DeMio Festival in London, ON. She premiered Pitch Blond in Toronto at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival winning 'Best of Fest Uptown' as well as the 'Critic's Pick for Favourite Production and Performance' by Now Magazine. Pitch Blond had a remount at the 2013 Next Stage Theatre Festival with a sold-out run!
