With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, based on Tevye and his Daughters by Sholem Aleichem, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF premiered on Broadway in 1964 starring Zero Mostel. The musical is set in the Imperial Russia in 1905 and the story centers around Tevye the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions, as outside influences encroach upon the families of their village.
The principal cast is comprised of Ed Riggs as Tevye, Sue Fehringer as Golde, Buff Wills as Tzeitel, Judy Young as Hodel, Ann Walsh as Chava, Glenn Meyers as Motel, David Young as Perchik, Steve Huete as Lazar Wolf, and Lynn Dowling as Yente the matchmaker. The ensemble cast also features: Pam Hurlbert, Gloria Saloky, Bill Reece, Diane Chamless, Pat Gouker, Carol Sheffer, Brian Scace, John Wagner, Joan Reeve, Barb Hastings, David Hurlbert, Sue McCleaf, Dottie Held, and John Zinn. The production is being directed by Ann Walsh and Buff Wills, with music direction and choreography by Vanessa Rice, and costume design by Kristin Tyree.
