Millersville University is proud to announce summer performing arts camps for students of elementary and middle-school age. Music, dance and theater will be taught by experienced leading professionals in the field dedicated not only to their art forms, but to arts education. The camps have been specially created for Lancaster youth by well-known children's theatre playwright and director Barry Kornhauser, who has been described as a "National Treasure."
"Each camp is designed so young people can actively explore the beauty, diversity, complexity, and challenges of the world through the artistic process, generate an appreciation of the performing arts as a vital force in their lives, and enable them to develop their own creative voice through a genuine understanding of the art forms." Korhauser said
"Arts Camps can make a significant difference in a child's life, giving them a rare opportunity that will affect their lives into adulthood. In our first outing, we are offering six different art camps, which take place at both the Ware and Winter Centers."
"Bang on a Can" allows a student to make and record his or her own music and perform live in concert on the big stage. "Kids, Meet the Band!" is for kids fascinated with all sorts of band instruments where they'll get to experience a different instrument each day. The music camps are taught by Kate Umble, who holds a doctorates degree in musical performance fromUniversity of Missouri in Kansas City.
"Dance a Story" chooses a different story each week where students will learn movement, design costumes and create props. "Dancing through the Decades" teaches students dance steps from each of the decades of the 20th Century, including how to move in differently styled costumes, which is not only historically accurate, but great fun. Both classes end in a performance for the public. They are taught by Priscilla Kaufhold who holds an MFA in Dance & Design from George Washington University. In addition to having her own Dance Company, Priscilla also is the Costume Designer/Costume Shop Manager at The Costume Shoppe at MU.
"Moving through Time" lets kids explore different kinds of theatre through the ages beginning with Everyman through Shakespeare and the present. "A World of Characters" explores characters such as clowns, fools, monsters, madmen and even angry parents, using Shakespeare as the guide. The teaching artist is Laura Korach Howell. Who received her professional training at the famous Circle-iin-the-Square Professional Theatre School and The Actor's Center, both in NYC and currently runs the People's Shakespeare Project.
"It's our hope that when a student emerges from one of our camps he or she is not only enriched by the experience, but can also look back and say it was great fun, too," Kornhauser summarized.
The camps are divided by grades (2-5 or 5-8) and are held both at the Ware Center (42 North Prince Street, Lancaster, PA - July 8-12) and the Winter Center (60 Cottage Avenue, Millersville, PA - July 15-18.) Morning sessions are from 9 AM to Noon. Afternoon sessions run from 1 to 4 PM. There are 12 different sessions varying by location, date and time. Tuition is $125 per class with discounts if registered for more than one session.
