The bases are loaded with musical theatre magic as Allenberry Playhouse, under the leadership of Artistic Director Ryan Gibbs, presents the Tony Award-winning musical Damn Yankees from June 17-July 19 on the Allenberry Mainstage.
Damn Yankees is choreographed by Becky Timms (Associate Choreographer for Broadway's Thoroughly Modern Millie), with music direction by Harrison Beck (Broadway's The Visit).
"Rarely does a musical come along that is perfect for everyone," said Artistic Director Ryan Gibbs. "Damn Yankees is a musical with heart and has tunes you will be humming for days. It's the kind of story that the kids will laugh at, the moms will relate to and the dads will be talking about for days."
Set in the glory days of the 1950s and full of song and dance, Damn Yankees is a modern retelling of "Faust" mashed up with the classic Shoeless Joe Jackson Baseball Scandal and delivers great entertainment alongside America's great pastime.
Based on Douglass Wallop's novel "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant", Damn Yankees features a home-run hit score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross with book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop. "Heart," "Whatever Lola Wants" are two Broadway standards featured in the score penned by Adler and Ross who also wrote the Tony Award-winning The Pajama Game.
Some men really like their baseball. Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the devil for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life he's left behind.
Allenberry's production stars Craig Treubert (National Tour: The Drowsy Chaperone) as Applegate, Jack O'Brien (National TourGhost) as Joe Hardy, Allison Mickelson (National Tour Elf) as Lola, Jeff March (National Tour: Church Basement Ladies) as Joe Boyd, Lanene Charters (Broadway Mamma Mia!) as Meg Boyd, Elizabeth Flanagan (National Tour A Christmas Story) as Gloria Thorpe, Paul Carlin (Returns to Allenberry after 20 years) (Van Buren), John Heinze (Allenberry's Producer) (Mr. Welch), Jordan Sharp (Sister). The ensemble features Alex Acevedo, Jackson Bartelme, Ashleigh Cease, Viveca Chow, Brett Folyz, Lorel Holt,TJ Lamando, Tommy Joscelyn, Dave Mancuso, Logan Marks, Zoe Moore, Joe O'Malley, Matthew Oster, Julia Palladino, Drew Patti, James Saracina, Daniela Sottile, and Nathan Willey.
The design team includes Darcy Bert (Sets), Kurt Alger (Costumes), Ryan Gibbs (Lights), Derek Mauldin (Sound). Tara Kelly is production stage manager.
Damn Yankees opened at Broadway's 46th Street Theatre (now Richard Rodgers) May 5, 1955, winning 7 1956 Tony Awards including Best Musical, starring Ray Walston, Stephen Douglass and Gwen Verdon, with choreography by Bob Fosse. Warner Brothers' 1958 film version starred Gwen Verdon and Ray Walston, with heartthrob Tab Hunter as Joe Hardy. A 1994 Broadway revival starred Victor Garber, Jarrod Emick and Bebe Neuwirth and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
