"A dark reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic tale of greed, jealousy, and corruption."
RICHARD II is one of those delicious little underproduced gems in the Shakespeare canon. It’s not one you expect to see every couple of seasons, even in dedicated Shakespeare companies, so when it pops up it’s always a welcome treat. The play also exists in this magical place inside the canon where it gets very playful with it’s own genre. It’s at the same time a history, a tragic drama, and is also surprisingly romantic. Richard himself is as intoxicating and powerful as Cleopatra, as poetic and vulnerable as Hamlet, and can also be as vicious and exacting as The Scottish Play’s Lady.
So, for The Company Theatre’s debut, a bold, raw, reinvigorated production of RICHARD II seemed like a perfect fit. It’s an incredible opportunity to be able to share our work with a Rochester audience in a new and different way, tailored to be exhibited in The Temple Theater Loft. We look forward to seeing you all there and thank you so much for your support as we continue on our journey, honoring tradition through innovation!
