New Works, New Voices
at the Syracuse University Department of Drama presents
MYTH OF THE MOUNTAIN

Book and Lyrics by Danielle Koenig, Music by Justin Cook

The Myth of the Mountain is a vibrant modern fable that asks: Can you know enough about the world logically that you don't need to experience it? It follows triplets, Mia, Mateo, and Mo, who have lived nearly their entire lives tied to a routine set by their estranged parents. After a tragic incident involving their tuna delivery truck driver, the triplets find themselves with a lack of daily lunch tuna, throwing their routine into chaos and prompting the triplets to venture outside for the first time. There, the triplets discover wonder, self-worth, and the joy of being alive.

The Myth of the Mountain is a new musical by Danielle Koenig (Book & Lyrics) and Justin D. Cook (Music), Directed by Kathleen Wrinn (Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre at Syracuse University's Department of Drama), Music Directed by Rebecca Karpoff (Associate Teaching Professor, Musical Theater Voice)  will present a staged reading of the musical theater.

The Myth of the Mountain is the second annual presentation of New Works, New Voices (NWNV) at the Syracuse University Department of Drama to be performed at The Loft (820 E. Genesee Street,  Syracuse, NY 13210).  NWNV is an initiative designed to support the development of musicals by writers and composers whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented in the musical theater canon.  Each year, one musical is selected, to receive a 3-week developmental reading in the Spring semester at Syracuse University and directed and music directed by SU Drama faculty and performed by SU Drama BFA students.

“Learning to navigate the new work developmental process is a critical part of the training and education of any young theater maker today.  I am proud that SU Drama supports this type of vital, collaborative work, and that our students are playing an active role in giving voice to new creators, stories, and lived experiences.”   Kathleen Wrinn, Director of The Myth of the Mountain and Founder and Artistic Director of New Works, New Voices

Myth of the Mountain was created as a thesis project by the NYU Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program alums Justin Cook (Cycle 31) and Danielle Koenig (Cycle 31).  This past December 2021, Koenig and Cook were invited to present a reading of Myth of the Mountain  at UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television. Senior and junior musical theater students were invited to audition and present the material in a staged presentation directed and music directed by theater faculty, Dan Belzer.

"It's been an absolute delight working with the SU Drama students and Kathleen Wrinn. Over the past two weeks we've made incredible strides with this show. We're incredibly grateful for all the students and faculty time at Syracuse University and looking forward to our next workshop or production." - Danielle Koenig
