The 44th Mainstage Season at the Hangar Theatre continues with A Doll's House, Part 2, from August 2 to 11. Directed by Michael Barakiva and written by Lucas Hnath, almost 140 years after the original's first performance. In 1879 Henrik Ibsen produced the story of Nora Helmer, a wife and mother at a time of limited opportunities would arise in a male-dominated world. Audiences were shocked by "the door slam heard around the world" as she leaves to lead a life free of domesticity.
In A Doll's House Part 2, audiences pick up 15 years later as Nora is at the peak of her success as an author advising women to liberate themselves from the bonds of domestic life. Now she must return home to the life she left behind, confronting her husband, Torvald, who never filed for divorce.
"While in rehearsals, I was struck by how perfectly this play will fit into our season," Director, Michael Barakiva says. "Where Pride and Prejudice shows the hilarity and ridiculousness of getting the perfect match, A Doll's House, Part 2 shows two characters, fifteen years later, negotiating what their lives have been without the other. It is a mature, heartbreaking and hilarious account of a deep relationship."
The Hangar Theatre is one of the first theatres in the country to be able to present A Doll's House, Part 2 after it's recent Broadway run.
