Skidmore Theater to Stage AMERICAN MEDEA, 11/14-23

The Skidmore College Department of Theater is pleased to announce its Fall 2014 production, AMERICAN MEDEA, written and directed by new artist in residence Holly L. Derr. Performances are November 14-16 and November 20-23. All shows are in the Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater on the Skidmore College campus at 8:00pm except Sunday matinees at 2:00pm.

Synopsis: This provocative re-imagining of the Medea myth plays out deep in the heart of Texas. When a media circus descends on the rural cow town of Corinth, TX, to cover a gruesome filicide, a community must confront its own expectations and prejudices about motherhood, identity, and gender roles in a post-modern world. AMERICAN MEDEA is an unflinching collage of story and culture, a new American myth based on our own contemporary Medeas.

This may mot be suitable for all audiences due to profanity, violence and other adult themes.

From Director and Playwright Holly L. Derr: "American Medea has so many different elements - original music, classical text, media frenzies ripped from the headlines. Yet it also tells a story with shocking clarity - that of a woman who, seeking support from her political leaders, her ex, her neighbors, and the media and finding none, commits the most desperate act imaginable. She kills her children."

About The Skidmore College Department of Theater: The Skidmore Theater Department is a pre-professional program that offers students the opportunity to pursue the serious study of the theater arts within a liberal arts setting. Courses within the department afford training in the basic demands of the discipline -- physical and vocal control, technique in acting and directing, technical and design skills -- as well as the opportunity for advanced study, practical production experience, study abroad, and off-campus internships.
