From tonight, Aug. 8 - Sept. 1, Chenango River Theatre will be one of the first theatres in the country to present the new version of Ring of Fire, The Music of Johnny Cash (co-produced by The Raymond Corporation). Just updated this spring at Milwaukee Rep Theatre - a company well known for creating highly successful "jukebox musicals" - the show is a living portrait of the Man in Black and features the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash in a unique musical about love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and home and family.
Cash left behind a veritable treasure trove of tunes, and all the favorites are here - the inescapable Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, Man in Black, Daddy Sang Bass, Five Feet High and Rising, I've Been Everywhere and many others. More than two dozen classic hits paint a musical portrait of The Man in Black that promises to be a foot-stompin', crowd-pleasin' salute to a uniquely American legend.
It's a musical review that will lift your heart and stir your soul in a tight, celebratory tribute to one of the 20th century's most influential singer-songwriters and one of our greatest musical poets. Modern-day fans obviously can't see the late Johnny Cash in concert - this show is the next best way to see a spirited retrospective interpretation of his work.
One of the highlights of the performance comes on the revue's tribute to Cash's funny songs - has there ever been a major recording artist who could move so easily from poignant songs about hardship or heartache to hilarious ditties? It wouldn't be right to leave out classics like Dirty Old Egg Suckin' Dog, Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart and the great Boy Named Sue.
Ring of Fire runs from tonight, Aug. 8 through Sept. 1 - Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., plus Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Some performances are already sold out. For more information visit www.chenangorivertheatre.org.
