WHAT:
The World Premiere performance of the acclaimed young Pierre Jalbert's new musical composition, Crossings, commissioned by Copland House and written for the Music from Copland House ensemble. In his new Crossings, Jalbert explores his French-Canadian ancestry, and takes listeners on a compelling journey inspired by 19th century French migration across an ocean and a continent, from Europe to Canada, down through New England (where the composer was born), and ultimately to Louisiana. The concert also includes music by one of his renowned teachers, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Joseph Schwantner, as well as the great French master
Maurice Ravel, who deeply influenced Jalbert.
WHEN:
Sunday, April 17 at 3pm
WHERE:
Copland House at Merestead, 455 Byram Lake Road, Mount Kisco
WHOA:
The well-traveled Jalbert, who is based at Houston's Rice University, is coming to Westchester almost directly from the Salzburg Global Festival in Austria, where he will have participated in seminars and discussions with leading international arts professionals to explore the transformative power of music in social, political, and cultural contexts. At Copland House at Merestead, the audience will get an up-close look into the creative process and hear a new piece of music introduced by the composer, who will serve as "tour-guide" through his new composition. He will also be on hand to take part in a lively Q&A with listeners and meet-the-artist reception following the event.
As California's Contra Costa Times recently observed, "if Pierre Jalbert were a baseball player, he'd be batting 1.000 by now. Not even Barry Bonds is that consistent."
A meet-the-artists reception follows the performance
