Avast, landlubbers! Climb aboard the 'Worthy Vessel' at Catskill's Bridge Street Theatre for a Concert Reading of "SOUTH: A Nautical Musical" on Sunday August 27 at 2:00 in the afternoon.
With an original story, book, music, and lyrics by local songwriter
Carmen Borgia, "SOUTH" unfolds in 1860 "...to the north of South America but south of North America." Afloat on turbulent seas - piloting the eternally sinking merchant ship Worthy - a wandering sailor nam
Ed Wheeler searches for his long-lost mother who vanished leaving him only a locket as a tantalizing clue to her identity and possible whereabouts. Such is his life until he meets the worldly Mister Pym, a collector of religious artifacts of dubious provenance and owner of an embarrassing painting whose subject bears a striking likeness to Wheeler himself. Thus begins a journey during which we encounter thieves, whores, pirates, priests, traders, renegade nuns, terrible cooks, drunken townspeople, a whole island full of well-adjusted lesbian cannibals, and caffeine dependency on the high seas!
This "Nautical Musical for Adults" was originally developed between 2006 and 2009 at Dixon Place in New York City and received a full production there in July of 2009 with generous support from the Greenwall Foundation, The Jerome Foundation, the
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Peg Sandtvoord Foundation. This Concert Reading at Bridge Street Theatre has been made possible in part by a generous grant from the Bank of Greene County Foundation, which also supported the reading of another musical by a local talent at Bridge Street this past May - Frank Cuthbert's "Coney Island".
