Cortland Repertory Theatre is announcing local Youth Auditions for actors between the ages of 10 - 18 for the summer productions of the Disney musical "Newsies" (June 25 - July 28, including rehearsals) and the Pulitzer prize winning play "Our Town" (July 16 - August 11, including rehearsals). Auditions will be held on Thursday, January 25 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at CRT Downtown, 24 Port Watson Street, Cortland. At 7:00 PM, a dance callback will be held, at which a dance combination will be taught to those individuals asked to stay. To schedule a Youth Audition appointment time, please call 607-753-6161.
All auditionees should come prepared with a non-returnable photo and resume, listing any theatrical training and experience, and parent's name, phone and email.
To be considered for "Newsies", youth auditionees must prepare a cut of a song, roughly 16 - 32 bars in length, and be prepared to dance in our callback if asked. Please prepare clean, readable sheet music for your song, with the section you are singing clearly marked for our pianist. Also please come prepared with comfortable dance attire and shoes if you are asked to dance. CRT is particularly seeking a disciplined, confident young boy between the ages of 10 - 15 who sings and dances very well for the role of Les, a 10 year old "Newsie". Les is a fearless street kid who is excited by everything the world has to offer and eager to join in the adventure. Fun is this kid's middle name. For other ensemble roles, CRT is considering both girls and boys to play the young newspaper boys.
To be considered for "Our Town", youth auditionees must prepare a brief monologue, about a minute in length. This can be from a play, a paragraph from a favorite book or a poem. Actors should be interesting and engaging story tellers. Note that "Our Town" takes place in the 1930s, not current day; audition material should reflect this. The roles of Rebecca Gibbs and Wally Webb, along with other youth ensemble characters, will be cast from this audition. Rebecca should look 14 years old; she is contrary, competitive, daring and a motivated dreamer. Wally should look 10 - 12 years old; he is stubborn, self-interested, but a lovable young boy. Because he appears in the graveyard scene, CRT is ultimately seeking a disciplined, focused young man who is comfortable sitting still for an extended amount of time!
